About the Breed

It's important to educate yourself before you embark on a new pup!

With a rise in popularity over recent years, bulldogs are perhaps one of the most recognizable breeds with their wrinkled muzzles (known as a sour mug) and fierce appearance. But don't let their looks deceive you. Bulldogs are sweet and loyal and flourish when treated as one of the family.

They prefer to sleep by your bed (or in your bed if you let 'em) and sit next to your chair while you watch TV. They crave lots of love and attention. Contrary to their size, they think they are lapdogs.

Known as the lazy man's dog, Bulldogs are known to lay around and snore all day. However, don't be surprised if your bully suddenly has a burst of energy and becomes an athlete. Don't expect this every day. Because of their soft palate (the source of their snorting and heavy breathing) some bullies have trouble breathing and exertion can make it difficult to get enough oxygen. While some bulldogs (like my Terra) can endure lots of activities most will be content just strolling  around the block.

Bulldogs are especially susceptible to heat exhaution as well as are sensitive to cold weather. Anything above 70 degrees can put your bully at risk for heat stroke or even death. It is best to have a cool place for them inside.

Your bulldog's nutrition should also be a priority. This is not a place to cut corners. Read the ingredients on the bag and try to stay away from fillers such as corn. Bulldogs systems are very sensitive and they are prone to gas. There are a few brands out there that my dogs have done well on (Nutro, Natural balance Duck and Potato, and Fred Meyer's Nitro Lamb and Rice). Every dog is different so you may find something that works even better for your bulldog. Bulldogs should also be treated as a large breed-dog. Because of their stature and bone structure, puppy food can make them grow too fast and cause joint problems. Consult your vet about this one.

My bulldogs love toys and do well with the kong-type. make sure you get something they cannot chew up and choke on. If you give them rawhyde, make sure you supervise them. The rawhyde gets soft and can cause them to choke!

If you are about to add a bulldog to your family, be sure to get a book or two and educate yourself on this breed. They are not your typical dog and require extra care and consideration.

I got my first bully back in 1997. I can
tell you it was love at first site! Once you go bulldog...you never go back!
